My Journey from BA English to Digital Marketing

My name is Mariyam Thabsheera, and my journey from studying BA English with literature to learning digital marketing has been a meaningful one. I completed my BA English with literature from Khansa Women’s College, Kumbla, where I developed a deep love for language, reading, and storytelling. Right now, I am studying digital marketing at Deep Learn Techno Lab in Kasaragod, and this new path is helping me connect creativity with strategy in a practical and exciting way.

When I first began studying English literature, I did not imagine that it would one day lead me toward digital marketing. At the time, I was simply drawn to books, writing, and the beauty of language. I enjoyed reading stories, analyzing texts, and understanding how words shape emotion and meaning. Over time, I realized that these same skills are incredibly valuable in the digital world. Whether I am writing a caption, blog post, or brand message, I am still working with the same core idea: how to connect with people through words.

How English literature shaped me

My BA English journey taught me much more than grammar and literature theory. It taught me how to think carefully, express ideas clearly, and observe the world more deeply. Literature opens your mind to different voices, cultures, emotions, and perspectives. It trains you to pay attention to detail and understand the power of communication. These are not just academic skills, they are life skills.

When I read literature, I learned that every sentence has a purpose. Every character, symbol, and theme carries meaning. That way of thinking has influenced how I now look at content and marketing. A good digital marketer must understand not only what to say, but also how to say it in a way that feels real and effective. My English background gave me the confidence to work with language thoughtfully, and that has become one of my biggest strengths.

Why digital marketing attracted me

I was drawn to digital marketing because it combines creativity with real-world application. I wanted to learn a field where writing could do more than express ideas; it could help businesses grow, reach people, and build trust. Digital marketing felt like the perfect space to apply my love for language in a more strategic way.

Today, almost every business needs an online presence. From social media and websites to blogs and email campaigns, digital communication has become essential. That is what made digital marketing so interesting to me. It is a field where words matter, but so do timing, consistency, audience understanding, and branding. I realized that if I could combine my writing skills with marketing knowledge, I could create content that is both meaningful and effective.

Learning at Deep Learn Techno Lab

Currently, I am doing digital marketing at Deep Learn Techno Lab in Kasaragod, where I am learning how the digital world works in a practical and structured way. This experience has helped me understand the many layers of online marketing. It is not just about posting content. It is about strategy, planning, audience behavior, content quality, and brand identity.

I have started learning how content writing, social media marketing, SEO, and branding all work together. Each topic has shown me a different side of digital communication. For example, content writing teaches me how to write for people. SEO teaches me how to write for both people and search engines. Social media marketing teaches me how to connect with an audience in a more personal and engaging way. Together, these skills are helping me grow into a more confident and versatile digital marketer.

The connection between literature and marketing

Many people may see English literature and digital marketing as very different fields, but in my experience, they are closely connected. Literature teaches you how to tell stories, and marketing teaches you how to use stories in a way that inspires action. Both depend on understanding human emotion.

A story in a novel and a story in a brand campaign both need a clear message, an emotional core, and a purpose. In digital marketing, this becomes especially important because people respond more strongly to content that feels human. A caption that sounds warm and honest will usually perform better than one that feels robotic. A website that tells a story will often leave a stronger impression than one that simply lists facts. My background in English helps me think about these things in a more natural way.

What digital marketing has taught me

Since starting my digital marketing journey, I have learned that effective marketing is both creative and strategic. It is not enough to write beautifully; the content also has to serve a purpose. It should attract attention, create interest, and encourage action. This has been one of the biggest and most valuable lessons for me.

I have also learned that consistency matters. A brand cannot grow if its message keeps changing. A good digital presence depends on regular effort, clear communication, and a strong understanding of the audience. This is why digital marketing feels so exciting to me. It is not random. It is thoughtful, intentional, and measurable

Another important lesson is that online content should always feel human. Whether it is a social media post, blog article, or product description, people want honesty, clarity, and personality. They do not want to feel like they are being sold to all the time. They want to feel understood. That is where my love for writing becomes especially useful.

Why storytelling matters in digital marketing

One of the most powerful things I have learned is that storytelling is at the heart of great marketing. People remember stories more than plain facts. They connect with experiences, emotions, and real voices. That is why storytelling is such an important part of content creation.

A brand story can make a business feel personal. A caption can make a customer feel seen. A blog can build trust by offering useful information in a warm and relatable voice. For me, storytelling is the bridge between English literature and digital marketing. It is the place where my academic background and my current learning meet.

This is especially true for handmade businesses and small brands. These businesses often have strong personal stories behind them. They are built with care, effort, and creativity. Digital marketing gives those stories a way to reach more people. It allows a brand to show not just what it sells, but also why it exists. That emotional connection can make a big difference.

My future goals

As I continue learning digital marketing, I want to build a career that combines creativity, communication, and strategy. I want to create content that feels natural, useful, and engaging. I want to help brands tell their stories in ways that are honest and effective. And I want to keep improving my skills so that I can contribute meaningfully to the digital space.

I am especially interested in content writing, social media marketing, and brand storytelling. These areas allow me to use my strengths in writing while also building practical marketing knowledge. I want to work with businesses that value genuine connection and clear communication. In the future, I hope to create work that not only looks good online, but also makes a real difference.

Final thoughts

My journey from BA English to digital marketing has taught me that every path has value, even if it does not look straight at first. My degree in English literature gave me a strong foundation in language, expression, and interpretation. My digital marketing studies at Deep Learn Techno Lab in Kasaragod are helping me turn those strengths into a practical career path.

This journey has shown me that creativity and strategy can work beautifully together. Words can inform, inspire, and convert when they are used with purpose. For me, digital marketing is not just a new subject, it is a new way of using what I already love. And that is what makes this journey so meaningful.
